2. after installation choose ACTIVATE OVER INTERNET
3. close Office
4. start office
5. check the Help/About Tab for Activation status or use the included license status check

you can install Office 2010 x86 on a 64-bit platform, as a matter of fact Microsoft recommends x64-based to choose the 32-bit version. you can see it here on the MSDN retail download page:

Processors that are 64-bit are becoming the standard for systems that range from servers to desktop computers. The 64-bit systems can use more virtual and physical memory than 32-bit systems. Microsoft Office 2010 introduces native 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office products to take advantage of this larger capacity. For example, this additional capacity is needed only by those Microsoft Excel users who require Excel spreadsheets that are larger than 2 gigabytes (GB). The 32-bit version of Office 2010 provides the same functionality and is also compatible with 32-bit add-ins. Therefore, the 32-bit version of Office 2010 is installed by default.

Supporting 32-bit Office 2010 applications that run on 64-bit operating systems allows for better compatibility with controls, add-ins, and VBA.

Then install Office 2010, it will still give you only updates (it did for me). Run Toolkit again, under activation tools tab clieck "activate" then let it do its thing, and bingo. Your activated! To double check it. open up office word ==> file==>help>>> it should say activated.
