Operation Blue Star 3? 6 June 1984 was an Indian military operation ordered by Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India,[4] to remove Sikh separatists, led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who were amassing weapons in the Golden Temple in Amritsar.[5] It has been described by Sikhs as a "ghallughara"[6] or massacre.
The operation was carried out by Indian army troops with tanks and armoured vehicles.[7] Militarily successful, the operation aroused immense controversy, and the government's justification for the timing and style of the attack are highly debated.[8] Operation Blue Star was included in the Top 10 Political Disgraces by India Today magazine.[9]
Official reports put the number of deaths among the Indian army at 83 and the number of civilian deaths at 492, though independent estimates ran much higher.[10]
The impact of the military assault, its aftermath and the increased tensions led to assaults on members of the Sikh community within India and uproar amongst Sikhs worldwide. In India, many Sikhs resigned from armed and civil administrative office and returned their government awards.[11] Some who perceived the attack as desecration of the Sikh shrine pledged revenge.[11] Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards on 31 October 1984 in her garden when she was going for an interview.[12]
Just over 25 years ago, the storming of The Golden Temple, the most sacred of Sikh shrines, by the Indian Army led to protests around the world. Sonia Deol embarks on a personal journey to unravel the events of 1984, an iconic year for Sikhs. It culminated in thousands of deaths including the assassination of the Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi. The bloody aftermath that followed so shocks Sonia that she is forced to reappraise the depth of her commitment to her faith.
